coin photoThere are many types of coin collectors in the world. In most cases, collectors are categorized based on the various ways they collect coins, their commitment towards collecting coins and the amount of money they spend.

Being a coin collector, which category do you think you fall into?

The Casual Coin Collector

Here are the common traits of a casual coin collector.

  • you collect coins no matter how old you are
  • you collect coins any type of coins that you came across just for the fun of it
  • you do not spend much on purchasing coins
  • you will collect some coins that are already obsolete, those that have been modified and are used my magicians, commemorative coins, those with errors, or those that are out of circulation
  • you inherited a collection of coins from your parents/ancestors, but you do not have much interests in them

The Curious Collector

Here are the common traits of a curious coin collector.

  • you have more interests in collecting coins rather than simply collecting them because you came across them
  • you are willing to buy coins, especially if they fall within your budget
  • you are spend more time at browsing coin collections at the coin shop compared to a casual collector
  • you spend significant time on the internet looking at coins sold on eBay or other coin sites
  • you collect coins without knowing that to do with them later
  • you have the desire to deepen your knowledge of coins and there is a good chance you will become an advanced coin collector in the future

The Extreme Collector

Here are the common traits of an extreme coin collector.

  • you find yourself concentrating almost all of your effort in this hobby
  • you start giving advice to new coin collectors
  • you have spent a significant amount of your savings on purchasing old and rare coins
  • you have your own coin shelf in your home
  • you are good friends with the coin shop owners and dealers, and visit them at least once a week
  • you start making money from your coin collections

It does not matter which category of coin collector you are. It is up to you. The important thing is that you find what you are doing, rewarding and fulfilling.
